The visual representation does not work well because it fails when it comes to the Gestalt quality of "closeness",
In less fancy words: There needs to either be less space between icon and associated arrow or more space between the arrow and the next icon.

The issue here is that tasklists/calendars/addessbooks are also folders from a programmers perspective that you can subscribe to/create/delete/...
I understand this is confusing for users because it does not match with their mental model.
Giving that folder management was one of the biggest issues for users, a redesign of the folder management might be the way to go.

What is the use case here? In what situation do I want to be sure that some recipients received my mail, but I don't care that much that others did?

We decided to use monochrome Icons for a reason.
If we add colors to every button that users have trouble finding, we would end up with rainbow.
Why should we color THIS button ?

Would this still work on a tiny phone screen?

General problem: if user uses first option here, they tend to use the same option for every other action/function, but sometimes this option is not available (-> consistency).

We have two indicators for unread: bold text and star icon. In the latest version (beta.kolabnow.com/apps) the star colored yellow.
