middle column in 'composing' menu on the wrong side
Open, LowPublic

Description

How to reproduce:
go to 'compose'

Problem:
usually, the hierarchy of the programm goes from left to right (example: Mail | Folders | Inbox | Preview of selected mail).
In the 'compose' interface however, functions that are (in a mental concept) lower than the actual task at hand (namely composing a mail) such as attachements etc. are shown to the left of the composing interface.
-> intuitively, one searches on the right or on the top
-> consistency

Additional problem:
Attached files are only shown in the left column next to the e-amil not above or below the wirtten text, where users expected it --> users didn't realize that a file, they had just attached, was already attached

the field with the attachemts looks like it's oly there to adapt/process the files

solution:
move middle column to the right of the composing column

Many of the test subjects were not sure if the attachment file was effectively attached because they did not look at the middle column (they attached the file via the 'functions row' at the top).
After they'd found it, they confirmed that the location of the column (especially with those functions) was not where they'd expected it (which is on the right of the comopsing column).

about the feedback if the attachement is succesfully loaded/ already attached to the e-mail when shown in the middle column:

adding another box showing the attachements where expected could also help:

So, would you propose to:

  • move the Options box to the right of the main box
  • move the Contacts box to the right of the main box
  • move both Options and Contacts to the right side?

@machniak

Actually, these "issues" weren't originally from me but I think moving the whole Options box/column to the right side of where you compose the email would do...
