No clear feeback about e-mail attachements
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

How to reproduce:
click on "Write E-Mail" --> E-mail editor opens

Problem:
Participans didn't realize they already attatched the picture/document to the e-amil because of missing feedback.
There is no line saying: attached
just: attach file (requestion, no feedback!)

The attached file appears below the "attach file" button so the participant clicked on the button to attach the selected file --> only opened a window to attache a new file

Second problem why they didn't realize the file already was attched:
The attached file is only shown in the left column next to the e-amil not above or below the wirtten text, where they expected it.

the field with the attachemts looks like it's oly there to adapt/process the files

Possible solution:

Yes, my test subjects also had problems noticing that the document had already been successful attached at first. The feedback could be clearer. However, most of them learned in the course of the experiment that the feedback of the program always appears on the bottom-right corner, so that these problems disappear towards the end of the experiment.

I think it might be disturbing over time if there was feedback every time. As Carlos said the user is learning in the course of using the program

@Testmiriam
Actually I find it quite good and clear to have the attachments in an extra box on the left.
We could only think about maybe adding an extra box in the place where you have suggested it, so that the attachments finally appear in two positions...

Yes Laura thats what I ment

The problem with the box on the left is that (at least to my participants ans obviously some others as well) it looked like only a space to sort the files and they weren't sure if having the file in the box also means it is attached to the e-mail

so there needs to be a clearer feedback about that

the box itself can stay in my opinion

Ok, but then the question is how we could implement this... What do you think about my idea? Or do you have any other suggestions?

I think an extra box is a good idea
thats also what I suggested as a pissible solution in the ticket
or do you mean something else?

No, I just wasn't sure whether you meant moving the complete box, which is currently on the left side, to the top (above the email field) or whether you are fine with my suggestion of showing attachments always in two places (on the left and above the email field).

@bohlender
What is your opinion?

@Testmiriam
Maybe the idea that David suggested here (T2723) would also solve the problem?

@Testmiriam
Ok, I have edited David's ticket description and added the problem that you have described here (namely, that users didn't realize that files were already attached), so maybe we can close this ticket then...?

Yes Davids ticket describes "both" problems now so we wouldnt Need this one anymore
I just think the solution to show it twice (like the suggestion you can see in the picture in the taskdescription; it might also make sense to show it on the right side next to the writing field like in davids ticket) might make more sense then showing the whole column on the right (what David suggested) since I don't think the programmer want to change the whole layout: the editing field / emailfield is always right and the field where you can select different options in the middle
so changing could become inconsistent and cofusing

@Testmiriam
Ok, so your suggestion would be to move the column to the right and additionally display the information about attachments above the email field?
Or do you mean leaving the "attachment box" where it is but additionally displaying the information about attachments above the email field?

And maybe you could add your suggestion as a comment to David's ticket then as well...
