No sufficient feedback if return receipt or delivery status notification has been requested successfully
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Compose new e-mail
  2. Click on the slider next to "Return receipt" or "Delivery status notification"

Actual results:
Slider moves to the right and turns blue, but no clear feedback is displayed if the option has been selected successfully (participants asked me if the option has been selected successfully)

Expected result:
In addition to the moving and changing colour of the slider, there should be displayed a clear feedback that the option has been selected successfully: "Return receipt/Delivery status notification requested successfully." This feedback should be displayed right after the clicking on the slider.

did participants ask after or before the mail was sent? Right after clicking on the slider or after sending?
when would we need feedback?

Actually I think that in this case "moving to the right and turning blue" is enough feedback... If a user is insecure he/she can still try it out again by clicking on the button again and will realize that the action is undone...

The participants asked me after clicking the slider and before sending the e-mail. The feedback should be displayed immediately after clicking the slider.

@Laura You're right with your latter point, but how does the user know this isn't a bug? I don't think that the moving and changing colour of the slider alone is a sufficient feedback because this probably would also happen when the function didn't work correctly. An alternative suggestion: Instead of displaying a feedback message in the lower right corner there could be displayed a small label above the text field saying something like "Return receipt requested" when the slider is blue and moved to the right (similar to the option discussed for the attachments in ticket T3463).

@Viktoria
But what kind of confirmation did your subjects want exactly then? Because I think that a feedback like "return receipt requested successfully" can actually only be given after the email was sent, because that is probably the (earliest) moment when the program (technically) is going to "ask for" the return receipt...

But when the problem was just that your subjects were unsure whether the had selected the option, then I would prefer simply adding some extra feedback box (in the center of the website, as we have suggested for feedback notifications in general)...

I think my participants would have needed some kind of confirmation that they have a) selected the function they wanted to select and b) that the function is active and (normally) works correctly (right after selecting the function). Simply presenting a feedback after sending the e-mail doesn't make sense in my opinion because when the e-mail has already been sent the sender has no possibility to change the settings he made regarding the return receipt.

Maybe it would be helpful to know whether all the other subjects had a problem with that or not...

@Viktoria
I think you got me wrong here: I didn't mean to add some "extra feedback" after the email has been sent, but actually to display feedback (in a "feedback box"/"feedback window") right after the user selected the option! Because as far as you describe it, this would be what your subjects would have needed?!
So, say: I click on "return receipt" and then directly afterwards a feedback appears saying "Return receipt has been requested successfully" Do you think that would be sufficient?

Yes, that was my initial idea when I wrote the ticket. Maybe I didn't make that clear enough.
