what is the usecase for a year overview?

It is a rather big UI element. Removing it when the user clicks on the "month view" will lead to "blinking" effect that might confuse users.

I believe that "birthday" is a special calendar that is liked to the addressbook entries. So if you have a person in your addressbook and said entry has a birthday, the birthday should show up in your calendar.
@EsIsl can you reprocude the issue on your system?

bohlender closed T3529: Function "Signature" is more likely expected among the formatting options above the text field and therefore hard to find as Wontfix.
I agree that a placement next to the text field is preferable. It is not achievable with a justifiable effort though.
Not a good idea. Checkbox is for bulk selection.
