Maybe we should authenticate the user with IMAP instead? As far as I know the protocol spec. does not require authentication, but it recommends it.

I would keep it out of this patch which fixes a regression for the current release in updates-testing, but in principle imap seems to make more sense given everything we would use auto-config for ultimately runs over IMAP.
