In the Roundcube calendar plugin, we can currently only type the name of the participiant, and then add it.
In Kolab 2/Horde, there was additionally the option to click "Addressbook", which should show you a list of addresses in the addressbook, which you can filter, and then select people by clicking their name.
This would help users with relatively small address books, to quickly select all the participants that they need.

The field has autocompletion feature implemented. So, should give you search results while typing. I know some people prefer addressbook widget, that's why we have it in mail compose screen.

I might try to create a new dialog using the ideas from the mail compose screen.
